Dario Amodei

Dario Amodei is the co-founder and CEO of Anthropic, the AI safety company behind Claude. A physicist and biophysicist by training (PhD Princeton), he co-led development of GPT-2 and GPT-3 at OpenAI and co-invented RLHF before departing in 2020 over disagreements about safety prioritization. He describes himself as "an accidental CEO of an accidental business."

Under his leadership, Anthropic has grown from $0 to $19B+ annualized revenue, making it one of the fastest-growing companies in history. His dual mandate (building frontier AI while maintaining rigorous safety standards) creates a productive tension that defines both the company and his leadership. He has pledged to donate 80% of his wealth and maintains two firm "red lines": no mass surveillance, no fully autonomous weapons.
