10 frameworks for how taste forms, how great design is evaluated, and what separates genuine innovation from novelty
Overview
Taste, for Ive, is not an innate gift or a set of aesthetic preferences. It is a trained sensitivity, the cultivated capacity to sense care and carelessness in made things. These ten frameworks describe how that sensitivity operates, where it comes from, and how it guides the distinction between design that serves people and design that merely impresses them.
Care as First Principle
Everything in Ive's philosophy orbits a single conviction: care is perceptible. Users may not be able to articulate why one product feels better than another, but they can feel it in the weight, the finish, the way a hinge clicks, the alignment of a seam. Care is not an internal attitude. It is a physical property of made things.
"Human beings sense care in the same way we sense carelessness."
This elevates design from a commercial activity to a moral one. If care is perceptible, then carelessness is an offense, a signal that the maker did not value the user enough to try. Ive calls careless products "personally offensive" and "offensive culturally, because it shows a disregard for our fellow human."
Treat every detail as a communication. Users will sense what you cared about and what you didn't, even if they can't explain how. The unseen details matter as much as the visible ones.
New vs. Different
Ive draws a sharp distinction between novelty and genuine innovation. Most products are designed to be different, to look fresh on a shelf, to signal newness. Very few are designed to be genuinely better.
"'Different' and 'new' is relatively easy. Doing something that's genuinely better is very hard."
"Being superficially different is the goal of so many of the products we see... rather than trying to innovate and genuinely taking the time, investing the resources and caring enough to try and make something better."
This is a rejection of design-as-spectacle. Innovation, for Ive, is improvement, not novelty. The question is never "is this new?" but "is this better?" If the answer is no, newness is irrelevant.
Before pursuing a new direction, ask: is this genuinely better, or just different? Novelty for its own sake is easy. Improvement is the hard, valuable thing.
The Fragility of Ideas
Ive believes that ideas are inherently vulnerable. When they first appear, they are barely formed, easily dismissed, and can be destroyed by premature criticism. Protecting ideas in their fragile early state is, in his view, one of the most important responsibilities of a creative leader.
"Ideas, by definition, are always fragile. If they were resolved, they wouldn't be ideas. They would be products that were ready to ship."
Ive describes Steve Jobs' understanding of this fragility as one of his greatest qualities:
"He better than anyone understood that while ideas ultimately can be so powerful, they begin as fragile, barely formed thoughts, so easily missed, so easily compromised, so easily just squished."
Apple's famous secrecy, in Ive's framing, is not corporate paranoia. It is creative protection, shielding vulnerable ideas from the premature judgment of people who will evaluate them by the standards of finished products.
Be deliberate about when and to whom you expose new ideas. Premature criticism kills more innovation than bad ideas do. Create protected spaces where half-formed thoughts can develop without being judged by finished-product standards.
Prototyping as Thinking
For Ive, prototyping is not validation of an existing idea. It is thinking made physical. The act of making a three-dimensional object changes how you understand the problem. It reveals things that sketches and screens cannot.
"Design is very much about designing and prototyping and making. When you separate those, the final result suffers."
"When you make a 3D model, however crude, you bring form to a nebulous idea and everything changes. The entire process shifts."
The numbers at Apple are staggering: 100+ prototypes for the AirPod case hinge to achieve the perfect "click." 50+ iterations on a single home button angle. 100+ screen variations for the iPhone. Six months perfecting the box opening experience. The Ive-designed Leica camera: 947 prototype parts, 561 models tested, 55 engineers, 2,149 total hours.
This is not perfectionism. It is epistemology: the belief that you cannot know what something should be until you have held it in your hands.
Make things physical as early as possible. Screens lie. Your hands will tell you things your eyes cannot. The gap between what you imagine and what you hold is where the real design happens.
The Back of the Drawer
A concept shared with Steve Jobs, who inherited it from his father's carpentry: you finish the back of a drawer even though nobody will see it. The invisible details matter because they reveal what you actually value.
"It's like finishing the back of a drawer. Nobody's going to see it, but you do it anyway. Products are a form of communication. They demonstrate your value system, what you care about."
This is why Apple designed the internal circuit boards of early Macs to be aesthetically pleasing, why the inside of the iMac G3 was as considered as the outside, and why the underside of every Apple laptop is machined as precisely as the top. The hidden work is not wasted. It contributes to the perceptible quality of the whole, especially when the user never sees it directly.
The parts no one sees define who you are more honestly than the parts everyone sees. Cutting corners on the invisible is a signal, to yourself and eventually to your user, of how much you actually care.
The Tuesday-Wednesday Theory
Ive's most honest articulation of the creative process: breakthroughs cannot be scheduled, only invited.
"There's something about the creative process that I still find remarkable, that you know, on the Tuesday there's not an idea. It's just Tuesday. And on Wednesday, there's an idea."
This is not mysticism. It is an empirical observation about how ideas arrive. You cannot force a breakthrough, but you can create conditions that make breakthroughs more likely: the right team, the right space, enough unstructured time, and enough trust to share half-formed thoughts without fear of judgment.
"A great idea cannot be predicted, but you can increase the probability of having a good idea, which is the reason I pay so much attention to the creative process."
Design your process for serendipity, not efficiency. Breakthroughs arrive when conditions are right, not when deadlines demand them. Protect unstructured time.
Writing as Problem-Framing
Ive uses writing not to document solutions but to examine how he is framing problems. He recognizes that most design failures happen before any designing begins, in the framing of the challenge itself.
"A lot of mistakes are made when you frame a problem, because you could already be dismissing 60-70 percent of the potential ideas."
By writing about the problem before attempting to solve it, Ive forces himself to notice assumptions that might otherwise remain invisible. The act of articulating "what are we actually trying to do?" exposes the constraints and biases that predetermine most of the solution space.
Before designing anything, write about the problem. Not the solution, the problem. Most of the design space is eliminated by how you frame the challenge. Examine your framing before you start solving.
Hand vs. Machine: A False Dichotomy
Ive rejects the romantic notion that handmade objects are inherently more valuable than machine-made ones. The value lies in care and intention, not in the means of production.
"It's a completely false notion that there is inherent value in what is made by hand, or an inherent lack of value in what is made by machine."
This is a critical distinction for anyone working in mass production. The AirPods are manufactured by the millions, but over 100 prototypes were made for the hinge alone. The care is there. It was expressed through the design of the manufacturing process rather than through individual hand labor.
Craft is about intention, not method. A machine-made product designed with extraordinary care will feel more human than a handmade product made carelessly. Focus on the care, not the means.
Focus as Saying No
Ive treats focus not as concentration on what matters, but as the discipline of ignoring what doesn't, even when you care about it.
"There are measures of focus, and one of them is how often you say no."
"The art of focus is even if it is something you care passionately about, focus means ignoring it, putting it to the side."
This extends beyond product features to entire categories. Jobs and Ive were famous for killing projects that were successful but distracting. Focus is expensive because it requires abandoning things that are genuinely good in service of things that might be great.
True focus is not doing fewer bad things. It is saying no to good things. Count how often you say no. That is your actual measure of focus.
Taste as Trained Sensitivity
Ive does not talk about taste as a set of rules or preferences. He describes it as a capacity, a cultivated ability to feel what is right, what is resolved, what serves the user. It is developed through years of making, looking, touching, and caring.
His own taste formed through layers of influence: his father the silversmith, who taught him that materials have their own integrity. Newcastle Polytechnic, where Bauhaus principles met workshop practice. The Dieter Rams inheritance (reduction, honesty, durability). And the pivotal moment when he first encountered the Macintosh:
"I was shocked that I had a sense of the people that made it."
That shock, the realization that a manufactured object could transmit human presence, became the foundation of his entire career. Taste, in Ive's framework, is the ability to detect that presence (or its absence) in everything you encounter. It is not about knowing what looks good. It is about knowing what feels cared for.
Taste is not born. It is built through sustained attention to how things are made. Study objects with your hands, not just your eyes. The question is not "do I like this?" but "can I sense the people who made it?"
